HOW TO GET READY
FOR YOUR FAMILY SESSION
WELCOME
Thank you for booking your Family portrait session with me. I can’t wait to meet you and your family, and I can’t wait to capture you all at this moment.
We are going to spend some time together - we hang out - take photos - and create portraits of you all and I am so up for it! I can’t wait!!!
My goal is to create images for you that are natural, beautiful and memorable. Photos that are YOU! Cause they are for you! All of you! I want to preserve the feeling of the love you have for each other—the connection you share with the ones that belong in your life.
You booked, signed the contract, paid your Session fee….but what next?
Please take the time and read through this guide, so we are all on the same page and everyone involved knows what’s happening before, during and after the session.
Please - Dear Adults, yes all adults. Grab a cuppa and have a read!
Make some notes if you have some questions you might want to ask me after reading through the guide.
Kat :)

There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

WHAT TO WEAR?
First and most importantly!
Something that’s you - something comfortable - something that compliments your shape and complexion - something you love wearing! And love seeing yourself in & that works with your home interior (this is where your photos will most likely be living).
Hydrate, Moisturise, Floss, clip the nails, polish the nails or not, shave or not, use make up or don’t.
Overall, keep it simple and stay true to you!
I guess the every day you with some extra sparkle is perfect.
I recommend: Paw paw for your lips. Shoes you are comfortable to walk in and do not mind being in the pictures. Weather appropriate clothes (I know - this is a bit tricky in Melbourne).
Let’s dive a little deeper
You like to coordinate it a little more… no worries - I hear you!
Start with yourself. Once you decided on an outfit, place your outfit on the bed or floor and add the outfits of the others. Now - how does it look? Do you like it?
Are the colours, patterns and textures of the fabric complementing each other? Great! Do you have a bit of variety instead of a matchy-matchy everyone looks the same style. Did you toss the Frozen and Superman t-shirts out of the selection and opted for something more timeless without any graphics? You like this colour combination for your living space? (Remember - that’s where your photos most likely be) Great !!! Want to add accessories? Go for it! Have a play - be the judge with your own good taste and do not overthink it ;)
If you do like to dive a bit deeper, please check out the Pinterest board for some clothing colour combination samples.

Keep it simple
& Keep it comfy and be gentle & kind with each other when picking outfits.
Everyone at the shoot should feel comfortable.
Getting Dirty
Reminder: These are your Outdoor Family Photos - this is not a High Fashion White Studio Shoot.
Please also keep in mind, depending on the location, there will be green lawn, sand, mud, gravel, moss, trees to climb on and water! These things are great for kids to interact with, but they are not so great on clothes…and clothes can get dirty, wet and damaged. Please be prepared that this might be the case.
Easy flow
Having said all of that, some families like it different. Everyone picks their own outfit, and kids dress themselves. If that’s your flow - please I encourage you to flow with it! You are absolutely allowed to be unapologetically you! Each and every one of you! These are YOUR Family Photos!!! Trackies, Tutu & Frozen Shirt - dress the way you flow! Go for it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmgIEArHIjg
Your photos, with your outfits for your walls!
I guess you get the idea, there are many ways to dress a cat :)
WHAT TO BRING?
Travel light & be prepared!
Bring what you would normally bring to the park, when you travel light!
I also recommend taking a look at this list for my recommendations:
- Snacks (Something for a great little energy hit)
- Water
- A change of clothes for the kids in case of emergencies
- Wet Wipes / Tissues / Band-Aids
- Maximum one toy for each child
(something that a child can carry themselves)
- a rug to sit on
- One small easy to carry bag for your keys and phones and watches, snacks and water bottle.
Try to stick to your one bag and leave the emergency clothes and extras in the car if you do not have a stroller.
Please bear in mind, whatever you bring along to your session will need to be carried. And if we have to carry to much it limits our freedom in movement.
Weather proofing / Location proofing:
- A Rainy Day: Umbrella / Raincoats / Gumboots / Mud pants
- A Warm Beach Day: Towel, Spare clothes, bathers
- Insect repellent & Sunscreen
Please block off 2-2.5 hours for the session, although it typically wraps up within 90 minutes. I don't charge by the hour, so we can remain flexible if unexpected situations arise. If a parent needs to leave for an important meeting, please inform me beforehand, and I'll prioritise capturing their presence while they're available.
THE QUIET - THE WILD - THE STAGE LOVER - THE HANGRY - THE TIRED AND THE OOPS I SPILLED THE JUICE OVER MY SHIRT…
We are all different! And that’s awesome!
You all are a bunch of different humans that make up this family!
Do not fight it - embrace it!
All new and Exciting
Of course the quiet one needs a bit longer to warm up and the wild one a bit longer to wind down. And that’s ok!
Despite - this is all a bit exciting! You know!!!
I am the Photo lady (yes i have been called that - you can also call me Kat) - but most of all I am a stranger, your kids have not met me before - and we probably have not met yet either! So this is all a bit new and exciting! Let’s give this a moment.
And we will dive deep into all things photo session & me pointing a big lens in your face! Awesome! - Hey ;)
This is not usually how you meet someone new! I know - Its close for a first date ;)
So the kids and you probably also feel and behave a bit different to a normal day out and about - just by yourself! And that’s normal and that’s cool and the kids might not be as well behaved as usual and that’s absolutely normal also. They do not have to be angels - I’d rather them being happy and wild!
And I can say NO if they overstep my boundaries. No biggie. And if I need your help I will ask for it :)
Trust me I am not helping with this either. I like to be silly as this often helps me build a connection with your children.
I like to invite you to playfulness, random flowing and enjoying our time together, hanging out together, dropping into the moment, the here and now. This is how we creating images of you all, that are real, raw and beautiful and that will mean something to you!
Having said that - we will also do some poses - of course we need most likely a photo or two for your parents/grandparents mantlepiece.
I will give you direction if need to and will interact with some games and prompts to encourage great photos that are also flattering and natural.
Sometimes I just observe and you can just ignore me and my noisy shutter ;)
Other times I find a moment with each one of you to take some individual portraits.
If you have the feeling i might be missing something - please let me know.
Lets flow together! And embrace each others uniqueness!
You probably also have already some photos in mind you like, and perhaps try to recreate one you have seen on my website or somewhere else.
I can say that much - we can try! And also we will do poses with consent and playful involvement. Not every posing scenario is for every family, weather or location.
Smiles and Icecream
You might feel the need to encourage smiles with telling your child to smile or offer them, lollies, videogames or a Porsche to smile for the photos, to sit still, to wear that itchy woollen jumper, the collard shirt and tie.
I usually do not ask for smiles. Instead I will get a more engaged and natural smile out of your child if we crack a joke they like or you all launch into a gentle tickle, than any “smile-command” would ever do! And same goes with the sitting still and let get them to do what we want for the photos. Lets gamify this experience and make it fun - so natural expressions can come to the surface.
I am patient and we can take breaks - snacks and all to recharge, if energy levels are low!
And well - it cannot hurt to have some ice-cream after your session as a little treat!
My grandfather used to say: “For ice-cream is always space, as it fills in the gaps!”
There is just a difference in saying - “one more photo before we go and get ice-cream” to “if you don’t sit still you won’t get any ice-cream!” or “only if you sit still you get some ice-cream”.
You know what I meaaaaan ;)
Lets make this a fun time!!!

AFTER THE SESSION
After your session, I will work on culling your images down to the best of the best (typically around 60+ images/session), then editing those images and getting them up into your gallery. Once they're ready, I'll be sure to get in touch with the link to your online gallery.
When you're ready to click the gallery link, and start the slideshow, I encourage you to make an event of it! Queue it up on your TV or a large computer screen and gather the whole family around.
The first time you see your photos is always the best.
Now you can start to select your favourite images, download all and decide if you like to add on an album or archival prints with or without frames.
QUESTIONAIRE
To get a glimpse of your family, I have a couple of questions I would like to ask you all.
I recommend doing the questionnaire together; it’s a great way to get ready for the session.
And it does eliminate questions and surprises during the session.
Looking forward to capturing beautiful moments with you and your family.
